Welcome to my homepage. Its currently under construction, so check back regularly for new changes. Now for the good stuff. Superchargers,and turbos. The very heart of horsepower is airflow. Increase the airflow, increase the power. Pretty simple. First, lets cover the basic premise of the naturally aspirated engine (Non-supercharged). Cylinder Heads are one of the biggest influences in airflow, so Hi-Performance Engines should be built with at least porting done on the factory heads.(budget allowing) If your considering aftermarket heads, first attempt some simple modifications to the existing heads. This is what I call free horsepower! The best kind. | ||||||||||||||||
Turbos are the most efficent of the huffers. Why, you ask? Well, they use energy that is normally lost through the tail-pipe. Unlike super-chargers, which do consume some power turning them. What down- fall they do have is they most often require complex plumbing that the average do-it yourselfer might not be capable of handling. Intercoolers are definitely a must, though, given the fact that the air is heated by the exhaust. For every 11 degrees warmer air temp 1% horsepower is lost. But this works both ways, if you can drop the air temp by say 77 degrees, you increase the output by 7%. This adds up. Centrifugal Superchargers |
Superchargers have caught on in the aftermarket like wild-fire. They are realitvely easy to install, and can increase power greatly. Thier advantage over the turbo is the fact that they require much less complex plumbing, and the air temperature is much cooler, thanks to the fact that the exhaust gases arent heating the air. But as boost increases, so does the need for an intercooler. Around 10 pounds of boost, you should run an intercooler. The sound of one of these on your car will really turn heads, when its under boost. | ||||||||||||||||
